5 Warning Signs Your Brake Pads Need Replacing

1. Squealing or High-Pitched Noise

Most pads include a small metal wear indicator that's designed to scrape against the rotor once the friction material gets thin, producing a sharp squeal on purpose. Hearing it consistently, especially on light braking, is your first and clearest signal to get the pads checked.

It's easy to dismiss an occasional squeak as dust or moisture, but a noise that returns every time you brake — regardless of weather — points to actual wear rather than a temporary condition.

2. Vibration or Pulsing Through the Pedal

A pulsing sensation under braking usually means the rotor surface has become uneven, often from a pad that's worn down unevenly or from heat warping the disc. Left unaddressed, this accelerates wear on the remaining pad material and can extend stopping distances.

This is also one of the more common reasons a routine pad replacement turns into a pad-and-rotor job, so catching it early can save you from a bigger bill later.

3. A Soft or Spongy Brake Pedal

If the pedal sinks further than usual before you feel resistance, it can indicate worn pads, air in the brake lines, or a fluid leak — all of which reduce your margin for error in an emergency stop.

Because this symptom can point to more than one underlying cause, it's worth having a technician inspect the full braking system rather than assuming pads alone are to blame.
